As Tracy Turnblad shows self-love and is a role model for those who face fat shaming, the desegregation theme in Hairspray speaks to social justice. Hairspray focuses on many cultural and social issues. The musical is set in the segregated sixties. Tracy’s mother Edna (played by Harvey Fierstein) encourages her to use her new platform to help bridge racial divides. She wants to dance on the Corny Collins Show (Corny Collins is played by Derek Hough) and is overjoyed when her dream comes true. The character Tracy Turnblad is overweight, yet she exhibits tremendous self-confidence.
